Hosting Definitions |
|
Anyone that has not
hosted a website or that is new to web hosting may have questions on
what exactly some of the hosting "lingo" is. We have provided some
of the more common definitions for the Hosting terms that you may
run across.
-
Autoresponder:
An automated program that acknowledges receipt of an e-mail message,
and then sends back a previously prepared email to the sender,
letting them know it was received or that certain actions are being
taken. For instance, if you have a support email set up and you want
to let the customer know that the support team is working on their
request, you can set up an autoresponder with that information.
-
Bonus Domain:
Also referred to as "Parked Domains". An example of this would be if
you have an online candy wrappers store and you want the domain
names candycovers.com, candycovers.net, candycovers.org, etc... and
you want each of these domain names to point to your online website.
This is a way many people use so that anyone who is looking at the
candycovers domains will only go to the one online flower delivery
store. If you would like to park a domain name with WAHM Website
Hosting, there are NO setup fees and NO monthly fees.
-
Catch All Email:
The catch-all email account is always a nice feature to have. This
means that any email that is sent to your domain will go to you. So,
even if you do not have a direct email set up, to a direct place, it
will still come to your root email. So, you can have
support@yourdomain.com, sales@yourdomain.com, and even a misspelled
word of upport@yourdomain.com will all go to your root email.
-
Cron Job:
Cron Jobs are used to execute scripts on the server at particular
times or days. For example, if you are running an expiring domain
script, you may want it to run at a particular time within the day
for the best results, instead of remembering to do it at the exact
time each and every day, you could simply schedule it to run
whenever you need it to run.
-
Disk Storage:
This refers to the amount of server disk storage that you have in
your account. This space holds all of your files. Scripts, such as
CGI, and PHP scripts, HTML files, images, POP3 Mail Messages, and
all other files that make up your website are the files that are
counted towards your storage space. If you need more disk space, you
will need to upgrade to the next package.
-
FrontPage:
MS FrontPage is software that you may use create and maintain your
website. This is a very popular program that makes your website
maintenance easy by providing a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You
Get) editor to edit your webpages.
-
MySQL Database:
This is a type of database. MySQL Databases run on the Linux
operating system. Databases provide FAST access to stored data, alot
faster than stored information on flat files. Depending on the
account that you signup with, you will receive 0-4 databases. If you
need another database, we will add additional databases for a one
time setup fee of $20.00. No monthly fees are added.
-
POP3 email
accounts:
Accounts that you setup using your domain name for instance:
katie@yourdomain.com or support@yourdomain.com. You can manage your
POP3 email accounts easily in the Mail Manager portion of your
Control Panel. You can also add accounts to your control panel
with specified logins and passwords for easy management through
programs like Outlook Express.
-
SMTP:
Also referred to as Simple Mail Transport Protocol. This is the main
protocol used to send email on the Internet. Most email is sent and
received through the Internet using SMTP.
-
Scripts:
These are special programs that have been written in languages like
PHP, Perl, or ASP. Things like Message Boards, Banner
Management Systems, and Guestbooks run on scripts. Scripts
must be installed to run. We offer an installation service, take a
look at our Orders Page for more
information. You receive 11 free CGI scripts with your hosting
account, these are: Simple CGI wrapper, Random HTML Generator,
Simple Guestbook, Advanced Guestbook, Counter, Java Clock, Countdown
Box, CGI Email, FormMail Clone, Entropy Search, Entropy Banner.
-
Site Statistics:
Statistics
are a wonderful thing to monitor to see how your online business is
doing. There are a few different stats methods that you can
monitor, and these are found within your control panel.
Awstats provides some pretty statistics that are easy to read and
understand. Statistics like Hits, Page Loads, and Uniques are
gauged as well as referring sites, and search engines.
-
Spam:
This is UNWANTED email. Spam has been a terribly annoying
occurrence that unfortunately is difficult to combat.
Earthlink uses a Spam Guard that may be the most effective at this
point, but our user Control Panels also come with an Email Filtering
system to filter out your email, as well as a Spam Blocker that you
may manually activate. Please understand that we do not
tolerate SPAM in any way, and we will terminate anyone's accounts if
they are found to violate this rule.
-
Transfer:
Also known as
Bandwidth. Depending on what your visitor requests to view on your
website is what will gauge data transfer. Data can be made up
of your webpages, images, or anything else that can be viewed or
downloaded by your visitors. The more popular your website is,
the more data transfer you will need. If you have purchased a
plan that does not have enough data transfer, you can simply
purchase additional transfer for $10/GB.
